Travel Diary: Barcelona, Spain

I set out to write this blog post last week but my body said “nope”! It had been a long week where my job decided to get their money’s worth with an impossible task list. And with the weather changing, I found myself having to deal with a cold. Then just when I thought the weekend was here to save me, I had a migraine to deal with. Don’t you just hate when your body just isn’t on the same page as your mind?

On our one year anniversary, I really wanted to share the second half of my honeymoon story with you. If you read my earlier post about our honeymoon, then you already know that the first part of our honeymoon was rather disastrous.  We spent the second part in Barcelona, Spain and did nothing but relax and shop. It is such a lovely city and the weather was lovely in October so we did a lot of walking around. Below are my five favorite places to walk in Barcelona plus some extra commentary 🙂 because why not?

Park Güell

This is such a lovely park with lovely views over the whole city and the ocean. It has several attactions that you have to pay to get into but it is free to just walk around. You can look at ticket prices here. We took the metro line to it but there are buses you can take also. All the information you need for park times and seasonal offerings are here

Avinguda Diagonal

It was one of my favorite places in Barcelona. It is one of the city’s broadest avenues and one of the most distinctive districts in Barclona. It cuts the city into two parta diagonally going west to east. There are huge walkways and bike paths that make it easy to go for a stroll to the diagonal mar mall, visit one of the many hotels lining the street, the parc diagonal mar and stop for a bite at the many local restaurants. The sunset view from the Melia Hotel was my favorite.

Nova Mar Bella beach

This was walking distance from our hotel and even though the weather was in the high 60s and 70s, people still surfed here and took boats out on the water. We had the benefit of beautiful sunsets and sunrises

Sagrada Familia De Gaudi

I was so fascinated by this Sagrada Família, this basilica has been under construction in Barcelona since the 1800’s. It is designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi who is long gone. Rumor has it that there are still decades of construction left on his masterpiece. I am totally here for the drama.

Gothic Quarter

We took a tour of the Gothic quarter. It was a free tour so it was a huge group of about 20 people and the guide had zero efs given. So keeping up was a bit of a challenge for me, especially since I was taking all these pictures. Oh, and be sure to put on some sensible shoes, there will be ALOT of walking on those tours! I did learn after the fact that there are some pretty cool taste Barcelona tours that offer tapas and wine as part of their tour. This one comes highly recommended on Trip Advisor. As you can tell, I was fascinated by all the balconies in this place! Such a romantic city.

In general, if you are looking for a chill vibe to your holiday and you appreciate intricate architecture, then Barcelona is your city. Ofcourse, if you are like me and you enjoy shopping, wine and food you should probably start planning your trip now.
