Things to Consider for a Trip to Bali

Bali is officially my happy place!
In less than 10 days, I climbed probably over 2000 flights of stairs (le fitness struggle), got hugged by a hairy elephant, got bitten by a monkey ,drank coffee made from animal poop, got lost in a rice terrace, fell out of a white water raft, got kicked out of a store in a local market in favor of “proper customer”, found Nemo! , watched the sunrise on the summit of an active volcano and rediscovered all the reasons why my man keeps me young and quite possibly is the reason for my white hairs! It is truly a magical place and I was seriously wishing I had an unlimited supply of vacation days. I plan to publish a few more blog posts about Bali but I am starting off with a few things you may want to consider if your crystal ball is showing Bali in your future;

Where to stay?

We stayed between Kuta and Ubud but what you plan to do in Bali should determine where you stay.
Seminyak, Kuta and Nusa Dua are coastal towns that you can choose from if you are into water sports, snorkeling and days spent vegged(yes that is a word) out on the beach.
If you would love to immerse yourself in Balinese life including seeing temples, shopping in local markets, going on safaris, seeing waterfalls and becoming one with the mosquitoes, then Ubud is your friend. Ubud is about an hour away from the coast and an hour from the volcanoes in the opposite direction.

What to pack?

Among the zillion things you could possibly overpack for your trip, there are few things I think you should not forget.

  1. Mosquito repellent is number one on my list because those mosquitoes are gangsta.
  2. Bali is hot! Like above 80 degrees hot so cotton clothing is a must to absorb the sweat.
  3. If you plan to do a lot of water activities, I suggest a go pro camera to document your adventure.
  4. If you have seasonal allergies, please pack some Claritin (allergy medicine). I could not find any in Bali and the pollen was not kind.
  5. Depending on where you stay, you will need a travel adapter to charge your electronics. No point packing your cables if you cant actually use them 🙂
  6. You may also want to pack a power bank. We stayed out all day and it was nice to not have to worry about my phone dying.
How much money should you plan to spend?

I found that things in Bali are cheap. And as a rule, you have to bargain the price before you buy anything. But generally, after the cost of flights and hotel, you can pretty much survive on less than $5 a day in terms of food.Activities and transport is where your money will likely go. Depending on the activity be prepared to pay between $50-100 per person. The nice thing about Bali is that there are plenty of FREE activities you can do. I will plan to discuss further in my next post.

Can I use Uber in Bali?

Yes. Uber works in Bali. With one exception. You will have a very hard time using it at the airport. There seems to be a some sort of conflict between Uber drivers and the airport taxi drivers. So you will find that even if a driver accepts your trip request, you will either have to rendezvous somewhere away from arrivals, or they will cancel the trip. Much simpler to just use one of the many taxis at the airport. As a rule though, cut whatever price you are given in half!

Should you rent a car?

Simple answer is probably not. Balinese folk drive on the right side of the road. if you are British, then you will feel right at home. Except, that they also tend to drive in the middle of the road. I mean, directly on the line and sometimes in the direct path of oncoming traffic! I can guarantee that your heart will skip a beat a few times.  Aside from that, the roads are a pretty tight squeeze. Might I suggest that you spend your time napping during hired car rides instead? We rented a driver for the whole day and it cost about $37.

How easy is it to fly into other countries in south east Asia?

Super easy and cheap too! We took a flight from Bali to KL for less than $100. From KL we spent $40 to Thailand. I couldn’t believe how cheap it was to fly from country to country! Only wished I had more time to explore.

Who should I plan my trip with?

You cannot go wrong with a strictly boys or girls trip to Bali. Its like adventure central there and there are so many things to do that, even with a mixed group, its easy to tailor your itinerary to favor different tastes in activities. But Bali is also an extremely romantic destination. We ran into so many honeymooners while we were there. The hotel staff took it for granted that we were on our honeymoon. I didn’t correct them 🙂 A little free bubbly didn’t hurt anyone. Bali is basically what you make it.  But your travel buddy will determine the pace of your  trip so choose wisely.
